DCT Gdansk now even closer to Asia
DCT Gdansk, the only container terminal in Poland able to serve deep-sea vessels calls strengthens its position as the Baltic Sea container hub.
Maersk Line was the first Line to introduce the direct shipping connection (AE10) from the Far East to the Baltic Sea recognizing the unique abilities of DCT Gdansk. Since January 2010 8,000 TEU container vessels appear in Gdansk every week carrying cargo destined to Poland, Russia and Finland.
This new product proved to be so successful for the Line that only a few months after its introduction, Maersk decided to skip two other ports, Hamburg and Le Havre, from the AE10 sailing schedule in order to respond to the growing Polish and Baltic market demand.
Once again DCT Gdansk proved that in addition to high quality services it is also an excellent gateway to Poland and ideal transhipment terminal to other ports in the Baltic Sea.
Maersk’s recent improvements to its mainline and feeder services calling DCT Gdansk also demonstrate that shipping lines can serve the Baltic market more efficiently without using traditional North Sea hub ports and also highlights the big market potential of Poland and the Baltic Sea region.
The AE10 direct connection of Far East ports to Gdansk now counts the following ports: Ningbo - Shanghai - Kaohsiung - Yantian - Hong Kong - Tanjung Pelepas - Zeebrugge - Gdansk - Gothenburg - Aarhus.
From September customers of AE10 will enjoy shorter transit time (by at least 2 days) from the Far East to Gdansk, as well as greater availability of space on board the ocean-going vessels.
Under the new schedule the AE10 service will call DCT Gdansk every weekend and it will provide excellent conditions to other Baltic destinations. More shipping lines are expected to introduce the similar solutions in the near future and DCT Gdansk is taking steps to increase its handling capacity to cater to this demand.
New Baltic feeder connection from DCT Gdansk
Maersk Line, the world biggest container line was the first global operator to recognize the potential of DCT Gdansk to become the Baltic hub. Since the beginning of 2010 Maersk Line S-class vessels within the AE10 string call DCT Gdansk on weekly basis to connect Asia with central Europe.
In the beginning of July 2010, Maersk Line introduced an additional Baltic feeder connection that uses solely DCT as hub port. In addition to benefitting from DCT’s high quality service, Maersk Line has also recognized that DCT Gdansk’s location is a more advantageous as a hub to serve other Baltic region destinations.
Maersk Line’s Managing Director for Eastern Central Europe covering Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary, Mr Jeff Gosciniak said: “We are pleased to announce that Maersk Line has deployed a new own feeder service on July 2nd named F15. The service is designed to cater for the additional import volumes from Gdansk to St. Petersburg as well as the export flows from St.Petersburg and Kotka to Gdansk. We hope that this service will give even more flexibility to our Customers in the Baltic Sea Region”.
Since beginning of July, the 956 TEU mv Hanse Confidence sails from DCT Gdansk every week as part of the new F15 service. The feeder vessel calls St. Petersburg (Russia) and Kotka (Finland), allowing a single vessel to complete the service loop in only seven days. Similar services operating from traditional Western European hub ports typically require at least two vessels and longer transit time to service the same destinations. Thanks to this new feeder connection, DCT Gdansk is currently the only terminal in Poland offering two connections a week to Kotka and St. Petersburg.

DCT Gdansk exceeds its 2009 handling volume
DCT Gdansk, Poland’s largest container terminal recorded dynamic growth in the first half of 2010. By June 2010,
it already exceeded its 2009 volume by handling a total of 173,279 TEU. Monthly handling volume continues to increase steadily and totaled in excess of 36,000 TEU in June. As a result DCT plans to triple its activity in 2010 compared to 2009 by handling around 450,000 TEUs.
The dynamic growth of the container volume handled allows DCT to accelerate its plans for investments into more handling equipment.
Boris Wenzel, CEO of DCT Gdansk commented:
”Thanks to our consistently high berth productivity levels, DCT Gdansk still has ample capacity to handle services from other lines with the same high quality of service our Clients have been accustomed to.
We expect to finalize shortly the purchase of additional equipment to gradually increase our handling capacity to
1 million TEU to maximise the potential of our existing infrastructure and respond to demand from the market.”
Longer term, the future expansion phases can provide DCT with up to 4 million TEU capacity to service Lines switching from traditional Northern European hubs in order to take advantage of DCT’s high quality service, facilities and location to service Poland and the rest of the Central & Eastern European markets.
DCT Gdansk is the only terminal in Poland and the Baltic Sea receiving weekly deep sea calls from the Far East operated by Maersk Line. The terminal also cooperates with a variety of other lines shipping their containers to Poland using public feeder services.

Two new Kalmar RTG cranes are working in DCT Gdansk terminal. The productivity at the terminal is still growing.
The dynamic increase of containers handled by DCT Gdansk terminal initiates the continuous investment in new equipment. DCT Gdansk has boosted its handling capabilities with the commissioning of two new Kalmar E-One2 rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RTGs), complementing the eight Liebherr cranes already in service.
Two modern Kalmar E-One2 RTG cranes were ordered in late 2009 and delivered to DCT Gdansk terminal in January 2010 by Cargotec.
After assembling and passing the required tests, the new RTGs came into operation. The Kalmar E-One2 is the latest RTG model and meets the latest safety and environmental demands whilst remaining productive and cost-effective. The 7+1 wide and 1-over-5 high RTGs with a maximum lifting capacity of 40 tonnes are equipped with Kalmar Smartrail®, an autosteering and container position verification system. Additional performance-enhancing technologies such as an electrical anti-sway system, have also been requested by DCT Gdansk.
DCT Gdańsk CEO Boris Wenzel has ensured that DCT Gdansk is ready to handle increased traffic including the AE10 line direct calls of the ocean-going vessels by Maersk:
“The need to expedite the development of our handling capabilities has increased as more shipping lines are considering calling on DCT Gdansk. To help us with our plans, we turned to Cargotec not only because they offer market-leading equipment but as they could accommodate a quick delivery time.”
DCT Gdańsk already enjoys a dominant position among the container terminals in Poland. All customers recognize the terminal’s potential so dynamics of the containers handling is constantly growing. Currently, the monthly handlings exceed the level of 30 000 TEUs. Being the first transshipment hub in Poland, DCT Gdansk is becoming crucial to importers and exporters in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe.

Presentation of the ACTIW LoadPlate device on DCT Gdansk terminal
On April 14th 2010 DCT Gdansk terminal organised a special presentation of the ACTIW LoadPlate device it has recently acquired.
The event was attended by about 100 customers and guests and demonstrated the modern technology of container stuffing which DCT is now able to offer to its clients.
ACTIW LoadPlate’s innovative stuffing process eliminates complications and risks associated with stuffing of cargo normally considered difficult for containerisation or susceptible to be damaged by conventional loading methods. It can easily and efficiently stuff cargo such as: steel constructions, machinery, steel pipes, steel sheets, bars, steel profiles, structural sections, as well as any other long or bulky units. It also significantly reduces the risk of cargo being damaged, as cargo is conveniently arranged on a LoadPlate outside the container.
The presentation was led by DCT Gdańsk’s management with the participation of a representative from Actiw Oy. It was followed by a demonstration of the equipment, and by a Q&A session.
The investment in Actiw Loadplate reflects DCT’s continued commitment as Poland’s leading container terminal to bring the highest quality service to its clients using the most modern technologies available.
